Why hire a pro
Your advantages to hiring a pro
A rented grinder looks cheap until you’re wrestling a machine that throws debris and leaves half the job in the ground. Here’s what a crew that does this daily gets you.
Safer than a rented grinder
Stump grinders are heavy machines that sling wood chips and rock. A crew that runs one daily keeps you and your property clear of it.
The right depth for what’s next
Sod, a new tree, or a patio each need a different depth. We grind to match what’s going in that spot, not a one-size default.
No torn-up yard, no leftover hole
Grinding chews the stump down in place instead of ripping the root ball out — no crater, no wrecked lawn to fix after.
Done in one visit
The grind, the surface roots, the cleanup, and the haul-off, same day. A job you’ve mowed around for years, finally crossed off.
Warning signs
Signs that stump shouldn’t sit any longer
A stump can sit for years. These are the ones worth grinding sooner — before the stump becomes a bigger problem than the tree ever was.

Suckers sprouting from the stump
Shoots ringing the stump mean the roots are still alive, pushing to regrow. Grinding ends it — cutting the sprouts just makes more.

Ants, termites, or beetles moving in
A rotting stump is a nest, feet from the house. Carpenter ants and termites that start there don’t stay there.

Mushrooms and soft, rotting wood
Fungus and decay spread through the soil to nearby roots, and a soft stump only gets messier the longer it sits.

In the mower’s path or a trip hazard
A stump you steer around every mow, or catch a foot on after dark. Ground flush, the spot just disappears.

Roots lifting the lawn or walkway
Surface roots off an old stump heave up sod and crack concrete. Grinding takes the stump and the worst of those roots with it.

You want the space back
Planting, sod, a patio, a fence line — none of it works around a stump. Grinding clears the spot so you can use that corner again.
Straightforward pricing
What stump grinding costs in the Sacramento area
Most people want a ballpark before they call. Fair enough. Around the Sacramento area, stumps are priced by width, not by the hour — it mostly comes down to how big the stump is and how hard it is to reach.
| The tree | Estimated price |
|---|---|
| A single stump, most yards | $100 – $400+ |
| Each extra stump, same visit | $40 – $60+ each |
| Wide, old, or hard to reach | $400 – $900+ |
These prices are estimates only. Prices may vary depending on your situation.
Most crews price by width — roughly $2 to $4+ per inch, minimum around $100. Extra stumps the same visit cost less, since the grinder’s already set up. Full extraction (pulling the whole root ball) runs more, and is only worth it if you’re building or replanting on the spot. Your real price comes from a free in-person look, before any work starts.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding chews the stump down to 6 to 12 inches below the soil and leaves the roots in the ground to rot out over time. Removal pulls the whole stump and root ball out, which leaves a big hole and costs more. For almost every yard, grinding is the better call. You only need full removal if you’re building or replanting right on the spot.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Usually 6 to 12 inches below grade, which is enough to lay sod, plant grass, or level the ground back out. If you’re putting a new tree or a structure in that exact spot, we grind it deeper. Tell us what’s going there and we’ll set the depth to match.
Can I plant grass or a new tree where the stump was?
Grass, yes, once we top the spot with soil. A new tree in the exact same hole is trickier, because old roots and leftover grindings sit in the way. For that, deeper grinding or full removal is the move. We’ll tell you which before we start.
What happens to the wood chips and grindings?
Grinding fills the hole with wood chips. You can keep them as free mulch and backfill, or we haul them off and top the spot with soil so it’s ready to plant. Your call, and it’s part of the quote either way.
How much does stump grinding cost in the Sacramento area?
Most single stumps run around $100 to $400+, priced by the stump’s width, not by the hour. Extra stumps in the same visit are cheaper, often $40 to $60+ each. Wide or hard-to-reach stumps run more. Those are area ballparks, not your quote. We give you an exact price in person, for free, before any work starts.
